Three cheers for Shojin, an entirely vegan, macrobiotic restaurant with so many specialty rolls, we’ll have to come back ten times to order them all. Don’t sleep on the Kiss of the Spider Woman, a mock stuffed shell crab roll made with enoki mushrooms, asparagus, avocado, pumpkin tempura and yuzu pepper cream. (Yum.)

This Old Town Pasadena favorite doesn’t only serve sushi–you can also get everything from a teriyaki “chicken” bowl to orange cauliflower fries. Come for the flavorful ramen, stay for the vegan sushi rolls. When we think of sushi in Los Angeles, we want flavorful plant-based food that pushes boundaries, but doesn’t take itself too seriously. (Is that too much to ask?) We got our wish at Gokoku with rolls like the Black Dragon, featuring plant-based shrimp, cucumber and spicy sauce with eggplant and avocado on top.

Plant-based sashimi? Don’t mind if we do. This Santa Monica staple is everything you could ask for in a vegan sushi spot, including dozens of fun specialty rolls. We’re partial to the Vegan Hot Lover Roll–not only is the name a winner, but with seaweed salad, kaiware (aka daikon radish sprouts), yamagobo (pickled burdock root), avocado, jalapeno, cucumber, sesame seeds and sriracha, it’s a flavor bomb, too.

OK, this vegan sushi spot is not technically in L.A., but an hour east of the city in Corona. But we had to highlight Kensho Vegan Sushi because it’s worth the trip. Take your pick of hand rolls, specialty rolls or all of the above. But don’t sleep on the tuna nigiri, made with konjac, an Asian yam.

Located 35 miles west of the city in LA county, this unassuming vegan hotspot is tucked away in a shopping center. The exclusively vegan menu is inventive, elaborate and original. This shop by dancer and sushi-maker Yoko Hasebe is only available online for delivery (or, if you prefer, you can take a private sushi-making class with her). But you won’t be disappointed if you order her plant sushi platter, which serves four, for your next vegan dinner party. It includes four to five kinds of seasonal nigiri and two kinds of rolls–best of all, it’s brought right to your door.

This vegan outpost by the owners of takeout-and-delivery-only restaurant Sushi With Attitude is every bit as inventive and fun as the original. We recommend the Kampyo Sweet Gourd and Cucumber Roll, the Portobello and Caramelized Onions Roll and the Asparagus, Cucumber and Takuan Roll.
