The Best Vegan Pizza in New York City

In NYC, there’s a pizzeria on every corner. And because the city is amazing like that, lots of pizza places offer a pretty decent vegan pie. But who has the very best vegan pizza? Here are the winners (in our humble, plant-based opinion). Below, the 17 best places to get vegan pizza in New York City, from Screamer’s to Emmy Squared.

1. Double Zero (East Village)

There’s vegan pizza and then there’s pizza that just happens to be vegan. Chef Matthew Kenney, who basically wrote the book (or, um, 10 of ’em) on elevated vegan fare, puts plant-based pizza front and center in this low-key East Village gem. With house-made cashew cheese, tomato sauce and seasonal produce like squash blossoms, this isn’t a just-have-one-slice situation. This is an eat-the-entire-pie-and-maybe-order-seconds thing.

2. Screamer’s Pizzeria (Brooklyn)

An entirely vegan pizza place? Welcome to Screamer’s, where even the meaty Supreme pie is plant-based. And with seitan sausage, Behive pepperoni, soy ham, bell peppers, red onions and cremini mushrooms, how could you resist? And if you’re not a pizza fan (we don’t trust you), there’s also calzones, wings, cheesy bread and a really damn delicious salad. Best of all, there are locations in both Greenpoint and Crown Heights.

Vegan pizza from Emmy Squared in New York City.

3. Emmy Squared (Multiple Locations)

Since its first Williamsburg location opened in 2016, Emmy Squared Pizza (part of the Pizza Loves Emily restaurant group) has quickly become one of New York City’s most popular pizzerias. And if you’re vegan and happen to love Detroit-style pizza, you’re in luck: While Emmy Squared isn’t a strictly plant-based restaurant, there are quite a few vegan options on the menu, including the classic (pictured here) and the Larry, piled high with roasted cauliflower, spinach, chili glaze, golden raisins, parsley pesto and pine nuts. Need we say more?

4. Two Boots Pizza (Multiple Locations)

While it isn’t a strictly vegan restaurant, we have to give major props to NYC institution Two Boots, who not only has a variety of vegan pies available for delivery, but often has at least a few different vegan offerings in their by-the-slice case. We’re partial to the Cleopatra Jones, with vegan sausage, roasted peppers, red onions and Daiya cheese.

5. Public Display of Affection (Gowanus)

There’s a Vegan Red and a Vegan White (above) pizza available at Public Display of Affection (PDA for short) and they’re both spectacular. Featuring a white sauce, garlic, broccoli, shiitake mushrooms, spinach and lemon, you can easily eat four slices in one sitting and not regret it for a second. And don’t sleep on the impressive offering of veggie sides, including roasted broccoli, heirloom tomatoes and sauteed greens.

Vegan pizza from Rizzo's Pizza in Astoria, NY.

6. Rizzo’s Pizza (Astoria)

When Rizzo’s first opened in Astoria, Queens, in 1969, we’re willing to bet there were no vegan options on the menu. But the people have spoken, and Rizzo’s now offers several plant-based pies, including the classic margherita. Rizzo’s prides itself on being vegan-friendly, so many of the pies are customizable–just ask for a vegan version and they’ll be happy to make it happen for you. Pretty great, huh?

7. Unregular Pizza (Union Square)

Vegan diners will be more than satisfied with the offerings from this Union Sqaure pizza spot just a stone’s throw from Strand Bookstore. Not only is there a dedicated vegan section of the menu, but there are also a surprising amount of plant-based, non-pizza items, including garlic squares and a truly decadent chicken parm sandwich. (And if you get a minute, read Unregular PIzza’s cool origin story: it started out bartering pizza for stuff like guitar lessons during the pandemic, and still celebrates its beginnings by bartering pizza for other products and services once a day.)

9. Hungry Like the Wolf (Hoboken)

OK, Hungry Like the Wolf is actually in Hoboken, New Jersey, not New York, but it’s fantastic enough (and close enough–just hop on the PATH) to sing its praises. This all-vegan pizza joint absolutely nails its menu offerings, including Sausage & Mushrooms, Chick’N Parm, Buffalo Cauliflower and even BBQ Jackfruit. Be still our plant-based hearts. It may not be the best vegan pizza in New York City, but it’s definitely the best in nearby New Jersey.

Vegan pizza from Artistic Pizza in the West Village, New York City.

9. Artistic Pizza (West Village)

Gluten-free vegans, rejoice. There are quite a few plant-based pizzas available at this West Village spot, including Vegan Chicken Bacon, Vegan Margherita (above), Vegan Veggie Galore and Vegan Meat Lover. But we’re especially impressed by the Zero Gluten Vegan Pepperoni Party Pizza with a crispy cauliflower crust.

Vegan pizza from Bar Dough in Midtown, Manhattan, New York City.

10. Bar Dough (Midtown)

There’s only one vegan option at this Times Square pizza-and-cocktail joint: a lone 10-inch pie with a cauliflower crust. But we give it major bonus points for the great balance of filling veggies, including baby spinach, mushrooms and plum tomato.

Vegan pizza from Brooklyn DOP in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

11. Brooklyn DOP (Park Slope)

Nothing against Daiya, but we love when a pizza place shakes up the vegan cheese game a bit. This masterpiece from Park Slope favorite Brooklyn DOP features vegan mozz from Miyoko’s Creamery. While it’s the only vegan pie available, you can customize it with toppings to your heart’s content…and we’re smitten.

12. Paulie Gee’s (Greenpoint)

We’re big fans of Paulie Gee’s extensive vegan menu, which includes ten specialty vegan pies, two soups and two desserts at the time of this writing. We’re partial to the Vegan Grapeful Dead, which includes baby spinach, NUMU vegan mozzarella, Follow Your Heart vegan parmesan, olive oil and house-pickled red grapes.

Vegan pizza from Andrew Bellucci's Pizzeria in Astoria, New York.

13. Andrew Bellucci’s Pizzeria (Astoria)

The secret to Bellucci’s deliciously melty vegan pies? NUMU, a plant-based mozzarella made locally in Brooklyn. The basic vegan pie can be customized with a number of veggie toppings, including olives, herbed mushrooms and vegan pepperoni. Bonus points: There’s also a vegan, gluten-free version.

Vegan pizza from Vinnie's Pizzeria in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York City.

13. Vinnie’s Pizzeria (Williamsburg)

There’s a truly bonkers number of plant-based offerings at Vinnie’s (13 vegan pies! Vegan parm hero! Vegan drumsticks!) including some really fun wildcards. Why go with plain cheese and tomato sauce when you could get the T. Hanks, with barbecue plant-based chicken, red onion, vegan cheddar, mozzarella and barbecue sauce? They don’t call it the best vegan pizza in New York City for nothin’.
